22/05/2012 11:27, Report by Nick Coppack United goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar insists his successor, David De Gea, proved his class last season and has backed the young Spaniard to continue to shine at Old Trafford. De Gea arrived from Atletico Madrid in July 2011 and, by his own admission, took time to find his feet in English football. Early mistakes were magnified in the press and attracted widespread criticism, with one high-profile football journalist labelling him a “liability” and suggesting the Reds’ scouts had made a serious error of judgement.
Liverpool’s hopes of winning the inaugural Standard Chartered EPL Masters Football Tournament in Thailand were dashed on Sunday after they failed to win a single game. Thousands of Liverpool supporters packed into the Impact Arena in the Thai capital to cheer on an LFC Masters side managed by John Barnes, but despite scoring arguably the best goals of the tournament through Julian Dicks and Robbie Fowler, the Reds crashed to three straight defeats.

Most of the chances came in the second period but the Reds had to settle for a third 0-0 draw in succession at this level, meaning a shoot-out was required to decide the victors at Old Trafford. Johnstone made three stunning saves – from Samir Carruthers, Danny Johnson and Courtney Cameron – to ensure the Reds lifted the trophy. Jordan Henderson reflected on his first season at Liverpool and admitted the 11 months he has spent on Merseyside since signing from Sunderland last summer have been punctuated by highs and lows. The 21-year-old is proud to have started in three Wembley outings in the space of just four months in 2012 and is delighted that the Reds were able to end a six-year wait for silverware by winning the Carling Cup in February this year.
