Young fires England to brink

Two United midfielders had contrasting first halves with their countries on Tuesday night as the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign continued.

While Ashley Young scored the only goal of England’s game against Wales at Wembley in the 35th minute, Darren Fletcher missed a penalty just before the break in Scotland’s must-win home match with Lithuania. Fortunately for Fletcher, Steven Naismith netted for his side five minutes after the restart to ultimately give the Scots the same slender victory as England – 1-0.

The two nations are in very different positions in terms of qualifying for next summer’s European Championship finals, however. After beating Wales, England are top of Group G by six points and can confirm a place in Poland and Ukraine with a draw away to Montenegro in October. Scotland lie third in Group I, ten points behind the leaders Spain and two adrift of Czech Republic who are favourites to reach the play-offs.

Like Fletcher, Young and new England right-back Chris Smalling both completed a full 90 on Tuesday night, with Wayne Rooney falling just short when he was replaced by Andy Carroll in the 89th minute.
