On this day in 1996, United won 4-0 at Elland Road in what proved to be Howard Wilkinson’s final game as Leeds manager.

Eric Cantona returned to his former club to ensure an even more hostile atmosphere than usual and his detractors enjoyed a rare missed penalty from the Frenchman after Nigel Martyn’s own-goal gave the Reds an early lead.

Nicky Butt did double the advantage and Karel Poborsky, in one of his finest performances for the club, hammered in a third to put the result beyond any doubt.

There was still time for Cantona to rub salt in the wounds – and enjoy the last laugh – as he prodded home before raising his arms in celebration in front of the home fans. Ryan Giggs ushered him away to a safer place but the hurt felt at his controversial cut-price move across the Pennines had already been intensified.
