U18s see off Magpies

United’s Under-18s repeated the reserve team’s 2-1 win over Newcastle earlier in the week thanks to goals from Larnell Cole and Luke Giverin.

The Magpies looked the likelier side to score in the second half after leading scorer Dan Taylor’s equaliser before the interval but substitute Giverin, playing on the left side of midfield, won the points with his first goal at league level.

Paul McGuinness’ side stretched their unbeaten run to seven games and prevented Newcastle from exacting any revenge for their FA Youth Cup exit at the hands of the Reds last month.

Jak Alnwick was worked by Ryan Tunnicliffe and Cole early on, but United’s rhythm was affected by an injury to Charni Ekangamene when he was caught by Patrick Nzuzi’s elbow. Nzuzi was booked and, after lengthy treatment on the touchline for a suspected broken nose, Ekangamene was forced to make way on the half-hour mark for Under-18 debutant Mats Moller Daehli.

A piece of magic from Cole illuminated the proceedings as the 18-year-old advanced on goal and curled an unstoppable shot past Alnwick from outside the area. It was a goal from the moment it left his boot and chalked up his eighth strike of a productive season.

After Ravel Morrison cracked a rising drive over the top, the Magpies levelled four minutes before half time when Ryan McGorrigan’s right-wing cross was headed past Sam Johnstone at the near post by Taylor despite the close attention of Tom Thorpe.
