United’s youngsters picked up a useful point from the trip to West Brom following a goalless draw on Saturday morning.

Paul McGuinness made a number of changes after the midweek FA Youth Cup exertions and captain Luke McCullough was one of the notable absentees after sustaining an injury against Derby.

17-year-old Jonny Sutherland made his first start in goal while Kenji Gorre was handed a chance to impress as Wednesday’s two-goal hero Jack Barmby did not get off the bench.

Sutherland made an impressive save to deny Aaron Birch with his legs during the opening stages while United’s best chances in the first half both fell to James Weir who fired over following fine work by Gyliano van Velzen and then forced a full-length save out of Jack Rose with a stinging drive.

Adnan Januzaj’s introduction for the second half helped provide added creativity with Weir switching to right-back to replace Donald Love. With Sutherland able to keep a clean sheet, the Reds gained the upper hand but were unable to convert any openings.

Van Velzen drilled the ball across goal with Sam Byrne unable to reach it and, towards the end, Luke Hendrie was unlucky with a shot from the edge of the area before Weir again brought the best out of Rose, with the home keeper tipping a 25-yarder around a post.

United: Sutherland; Love (Januzaj 46), Wilkinson, Blackett, Rowley (Daehli 75); Weir, Ekangamene, Hendrie, Gorre (McNair 70); van Velzen, Byrne. Subs: Jacob, Barmby.
