Suarez: I was LFC on PlayStation

Luis Suarez has revealed how Liverpool was his PlayStation team when he was a boy.

The Uruguay international supports his first club, Montevideo de Nacional, but that’s not to say Anfield wasn’t on his radar as a youngster.

“The whole world knows what history Liverpool have,” Suarez told FourFourTwo.

“They are one of the best teams in Europe, some great players have played here and I was very excited to join. When I was 10-years-old I used to play as them on PlayStation but I never imagined I would play here.”

Kenny Dalglish carved his name as a footballing icon before Suarez was born – but it hasn’t taken long for the Scot’s legendary status to translate.

“I’ve already learned a lot from him,” said the 24-year-old. “It seems like it’s only been a little while since he was last coaching.

“The first thing he said to me was ‘Hola, bienvenido’ [Hello, welcome]. He still talks to me in Spanish because I don’t understand English fully yet. This makes me feel wanted.”

While his new strike-partner Andy Carroll grew up idolising local hero Alan Shearer, Suarez looked a little further from home for footballing inspiration – Argentina, to be precise.

“Gabriel Batistuta reflects the bread and butter of the striker; what his soul must be,” said our No.7. “I think I have acquired that never-surrender attitude from him, because he never gave up.”
