Nani says United will look to start brightly and score early when Marseille come to Old Trafford next Month.

The Portuguese was among United’s best performers at Stade Velodrome on Wednesday night, but not even his trickery could unlock a stubborn Marseille defence.

Of course, there are worse results than a 0-0 draw away from home in Europe, but Nani couldn’t hide his disappointment at the final whistle.

“We would have liked to have won the game,” he told ManUtd.com. “Our performance wasn’t the best. We worked hard but sometimes things don’t turn out how you’d hope.

“We have another opportunity to get the job done in the next game and, with our supporters behind us, we know we have a fantastic chance.”

The Reds will hope the return leg follows a similar pattern to the last two occasions in which Sir Alex’s men returned from knockout ties in Europe with goalless draws. Then, against both Internazionale (2008/09) and Barcelona (2007/08), United scored early in the second leg at Old Trafford – Vidic against the Italians after only four minutes, Scholes against the Catalan giants after 14.

Nani is calling for more of the same when Marseille arrive in M16 on Tuesday 15 March.

“We need to make sure we are positive and strong from the start and do our best to try and score an early goal. We need to make sure we win at Old Trafford.”
