Martin Jol’s boys can hit the ground running…

Hopes and fears A better start than last term will be high on the wish list (they were briefly bottom) – and the chances seem solid given that new gaffer Martin Jol will retain nearly all of those players who clambered to a decent finish.

You’re the boss Jol returns to England almost four years after exiting White Hart Lane, where he led Spurs to the brink of Champions League football. On Fulham’s radar a year ago, he was free to take up the opportunity created by Mark Hughes’ out-of-the-blue departure, having stepped down as Ajax boss last December.

Who’s the man? Injury to Bobby Zamora thrust the 2010/11 goalscoring mantle onto Clint Dempsey, who took to his task with gusto. The American could be pivotal to Fulham’s progress this term.

Young guns Teenagers Lauri Dalla Valle and Kerim Frei are two to watch after July debuts in the Europa League. So too is defender Matt Briggs, who in May 2007 – aged 16 years, 65 days – became the youngest-ever Premier League player.

In and outs Fomer Liverpool defender John Arne Riise arrives from Roma to join up with younger brother Bjorn Helge at Craven Cottage. On their way out are South African midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi (to Crystal Palace), Diomansy Kamara (to Eskisehirspor in Turkey), Jonathan Greening (to Nottingham Forest) and Zoltan Gera (to West Brom).
