Rio Ferdinand may no longer be first choice for his country, but Sir Alex Ferguson insists the defender remains a vital figure for his club.
The 32-year-old was surprisingly left out of Fabio Capello’s squad for the final Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro last week despite having returned to full fitness.
Sir Alex is sympathetic over Ferdinand’s omission, but insists his importance to United is unquestionable.
“Rio has been training very well and is back to his best form,” the boss told reporters on Friday. “The England thing is maybe unfortunate because he missed a couple of appearances through injury. Maybe Fabio [Capello] is looking to the future. Rio is 32 now. That may just be the reason. Some managers think that way.
“There is nothing wrong with looking to the future. Rio has had a great time, not just as the captain for England but also as a player for England. He has always done well in English colours.”
While Rio remains first choice for the Reds, competition for places in the back four is intense with the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans all pushing Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for a regular starting berth at the heart of the defence.
“Competition is so fierce now with these young lads coming through,” adds Sir Alex.
“Jones, Smalling and Evans have all been outstanding. Rio and Vida are well aware they are going to have to play well to keep their places.”
