United’s reserves remain on course to win Northern Group A after Oliver Norwood struck both goals to defeat Everton.

The Merseysiders’ all-teenage line-up were always going to struggle to contain a team containing Wes Brown and Anderson that extended their run to one defeat in 19 games.

United made all the running with Bebe slashing a wild overhead kick well off target and Anderson forcing a one-handed save out of Adam Davies. Norwood was doing his best Paul Scholes impression in midfield and another of his raking passes led to Gabriel Obertan firing wide before the Frenchman volleyed at Davies from an Oliver Gill flick-on.

Obertan was denied again just past the half-hour mark when another visionary through ball by Norwood allowed the ex-Bordeaux forward to lob over Davies, only for Shkodran Mustafi to clear. Anderson provided flashes of quality, teeing up Obertan for a weak attempt and then forcing another superb diving stop out of Davies before a penalty provided United with the opener.

Norwood’s corner was headed on by Bebe and Scott Wootton was clearly shoved by Aristote Nsiala as he waited to nod in. Norwood stepped up to confidently send Davies the wrong way. Everton’s only shot on target in the first half was a free-kick by Adam Forshaw and they struggled to impress.
