Rio Ferdinand

Neil Ashton writes in the Daily Mail…

Rio an injury doubtRio Ferdinand is a doubt for Manchester United’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday after suffering concussion at the weekend. The United defender must pass a series of rigorous cognitive tests by the club’s medical department this week to be available for the match at the Emirates. Ferdinand claimed on Twitter that he ‘could not remember’ what happened during United’s 3-0 victory over Bolton at Old Trafford on Saturday. He also admitted  he had suffered concussion, which under previous FA rules meant he would automatically miss the next 10 days. But the FA have relaxed the guidelines and Ferdinand, 33, will now be put through a thorough medical examination. United manager  Sir Alex Ferguson is counting on one of  his most experienced defenders for the title run-in after losing captain Nemanja Vidic with a long-term  knee injury.

Elsewhere, the Ravel Morrison contract saga continues, with The Telegraph now reporting the young player is “expected to leave Old Trafford because of a failure to agree terms over a new deal at the club”. Morrison countered Sir Alex’s claims that the teenager’s demands were “unrealistic” by posting on Twitter. “I never 1s [once] turned down a contract off Manchester United,” he wrote.

A number of papers, including the Daily Star and the Mirror, repurpose the manager’s programme notes from Saturday (Sir Alex says there can be “no excuses now” as a number of injured players are returning and others are not far away), while the Express run quotes from the programme’s exclusive interview with Chris Smalling. Smalling claims no other club has been hit as hard by injuries as United.
