United expected to extend Park contractJi-sung Park is set for contract talks at the start of next season with the South Korean midfielder expected to follow Michael Owen in extending his stay at Old Trafford. Park, whose contract expires in June 2012, is due to open talks over an extension to his deal once the club returns from their pre-season tour of the United States in August. Park, who returned to South Korea on Tuesday, admits he is keen to remain at United having arrived in a £4m transfer from PSV Eindhoven in June 2005. He said: “Manchester United is an important club and I am happy if I’m seen as an important part of the club. In football anything can happen, but I’ve been here six years and I like this club.” But while Park can expect a two-year extension to his current deal, the futures of Dimitar Berbatov, John O’Shea and Darron Gibson – all of whom are out of contract next summer – are unlikely to be resolved until the new year, should they remain at the club beyond this summer. Wes Brown, whose contract also expires next year, is likely to be sold during the close season.
The Mirror believe Everton and Sunderland are two of the clubs trailing Brown, who is tipped to end his 13-year association with United.
Lionel Messi, the Reds’ chief tormentor in the Champions League final, has no intention of ever leaving Camp Nou. “I cannot see myself ever playing in any club shirt apart from Barcelona’s,” he is quoted as saying in The Sun. Sticking in Spain, Iker Casillas told the Madrid media that Real would have beaten United as well at Wembley and those comments are reproduced in several newspapers this morning.
