‘Now Andy will hit the goal trail’

Lucas Leiva is tipping Andy Carroll to hit the goal trail following his explosive brace in the 3-0 victory over Manchester City.

The former Newcastle man broke his Reds duck with a thunderous drive before glancing home a fine header prior to the interval, leaving the Brazilian full of praise for the No.9.

“Everyone is so happy for Andy,” Lucas said. “For a few games he’s been trying to score and at times has been unlucky.

“Tonight he showed what he’s capable of – not just with his head but with his feet as well.

“Your first goal is always the most difficult to get. I’m sure now he will get more and more.

“He will have more confidence for the next games. It’s up to us to keep creating chances for him.”

Ahead of the clash with Roberto Mancini’s side, Kenny Dalglish opted to give a full debut to Academy youngster John Flanagan.

The 18-year-old gave an assured display at the back throughout the 90 minutes and Lucas was delighted by his impact.

“We know the team is missing players but those who came did so well, especially Flanno,” Lucas said.

“It was a fantastic achievement not just for him but for the club who are looking to bring young players through.

“Flanno is a quiet lad but he likes to listen and ask for advice. Everyone on the pitch tried to make him feel comfortable. We tried to be positive all the time because we know how difficult it is to make your debut. He was fantastic.

“Jay (Spearing) is also a very good lad. I am more experienced than him so I give him advice in the same way I get advice from players like Pepe and Carra.

“He’s doing really well and is another player from the Academy which is what the fans want to see. Everyone could see tonight Liverpool are going in the right direction. I’m really happy with the way everything is going.”

The victory over City moves Liverpool back into the reckoning for a fifth-place finish and Lucas is eager for them to take that momentum into next Sunday’s clash at title-chasing Arsenal.

Lucas said: “The intensity of our game in the first half especially was amazing.

“Now we just have to try to play with that kind of character in every game.

“We know it is difficult but always in big games we seem to play better than in games in which we maybe think it will be a bit easier.

“Under Kenny we’ve won all the big games against United, City and Chelsea. We want to keep winning and get into a better position in the table.”

Meanwhile, Dirk Kuyt joined those eager to salute the performance of Carroll.

He said: “The players have been very happy with the signings of Andy and Luis.

“Andy’s scored his first goals today – it has been tough for him after injury, but he’s played very well.

“No-one is more happy than Andy, but his team-mates are happy for him too.

“He’s very good in the air and can score with both feet – he’s a big threat for the team.”
