After starring for Watford last term, Tom Cleverley has enjoyed a solid first season at Premier League level.

The energetic midfielder is also key part of Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 set-up and can be delighted with his work for Wigan as the Latics avoided the drop on a dramatic final day.

Reserve team boss Warren Joyce has been keeping close tabs on the youngster’s development.

“Tom’s one that every challenge that’s ever been put on him, he’s been up to,” said Joyce. ”I’ve watched him really closely over the last two years and obviously worked with him before he went out on loan. I certainly believe Cleverley could play at this level and he’s delivered at Wigan this year. They’ve struggled but he’s been asked to play in a couple of different roles and he’s turned in a good job for the team.

“I think he’s a multi-purpose player and has just proved to himself he’s capable of playing at that level. I’ve always believed if Cleverley had maybe got a chance, he may have taken it earlier but, anyway, he’s a lot stronger now. He’s got experience of a few different clubs and has done well whatever challenge was put in front of him.

“Now he’s really hungry and desperate to make a name for himself at Manchester United. I’m sure he’ll come back firing on all cylinders for next year.
