Kenny: His mind games won’t work

Kenny Dalglish insists his longstanding rivalry with Alex Ferguson means the Liverpool manager won’t be affected by any attempt at mind games.

The two Scots take charge in a league encounter between English football’s most successful clubs for the first time since the early 90s on Sunday afternoon and the Reds boss believes any pre-match psychology will prove irrelevant.
Dalglish said: “He has used psychology before in the pre-amble to matches, but he will only get sparring practice if he tries to use it on ourselves.
“We’ve both been a long time out of short trousers. It will have to be a good one to catch us out.”
Dalglish first came across Ferguson many eons ago when the duo locked horns in a reserve team clash in Glasgow.
Asked about the occasion, the Reds manager said: “It was 40 years ago, and I was marking him in a reserve game!
“I was a big, bruising centre-back and he was up front. I read somewhere that he said he’d scored, but I thought we won 2-0. I’m probably wrong about that one as well. We definitely beat them, though.
“I was only 18 and in defence because of my height and aggression…! No, it was for educational purposes, that’s all.
“Fergie had gone for a lot of money to Rangers and they’d lost the Cup final to Celtic the year before. He might have been on the way out at Ibrox at the time.
“The first team played their game at Ibrox and the reserves were at Celtic Park, and he was up against us. I have to say he never gave me a problem!”
Over the years it has been clear the two managers have enjoyed fierce competition – but there has always been a level of respect too.
“He’s always dropped a letter of congratulations when you win something, always done that. But after Blackburn won the league he couldn’t resist a PS,” Dalglish explained.
“It said something about Devon Loch, but I wasn’t a fisherman so I didn’t know where that was.
“Maybe he’s glad I’m back to renew our rivalry – because we’re Glaswegian. Is that what you mean, the accent? I don’t know whether he is happy I’m back or not, really. I’m just happy I’m back. If he is unhappy about it, that’s not my problem.
“Is he still talking about my daughter? She will be there to haunt him on Sunday.”
