The old year may have ended on a disappointing note for Manchester United – with Saturday’s shock 2-3 defeat to Blackburn – but at least the new one started with a fillip as rivals Manchester City also lost, 0-1 away to Sunderland.

Roberto Mancini’s table toppers would have gained a clear lead over the Reds had they even drawn at the Stadium of Light this afternoon (Sunday) – instead they remain level on points after conceding an injury-time winner scored by Ji Dong-won, a compatriot of United’s own Ji-sung Park.
