Boss upset by De Gea agenda

Sir Alex feels David De Gea has been unfairly treated by the media since joining United.

The young Spaniard has succeeded Edwin van der Sar as the champions’ No1 and is adapting to life in the Barclays Premier League, keeping clean sheets against Spurs and Bolton and, of course, making a spectacular penalty save in the romp over Arsenal.

Yet some considered Anders Lindegaard’s assured display at Benfica to indicate that more pressure was building on the former Atletico Madrid youngster, even though the manager has stressed the situation to the two keepers all along.

De Gea will start on Sunday when Chelsea provide the opposition at Old Trafford and the manager doesn’t understand why there is continued debate on the subject of the position between the posts. Last weekend, there were erroneous reports in the morning press that the 20-year-old would be left out at The Reebok, even though he’d been told on the Thursday that he’d be playing.

“There’s obviously an agenda on De Gea,” Sir Alex stated. “We’ve experienced that in the press for some reason. They seem desperate for the boy to fail.

“That’s the impression I get and I don’t understand it. It’s nothing to do with his age. They never did that with Petr Cech.

“I think they will all want interviews with him when he’s doing well. He doesn’t speak English, was looking for a house but has got one now, and is learning to drive in England. He’s 20 years of age and doesn’t know the culture of the country. I think that’s a lot to deal with but he’s shown great composure about the whole thing. He’s not got himself flapping about the goalmouth. I think he’s absolutely outstanding – the boy is tremendous.”
