Boss ready for headache

Sir Alex is already looking forward to having a fully-fit squad at his disposal as Javier Hernandez closes on a first-team return.

The manager is fully aware of the selection headache the Mexican will pose when he recovers from the concussion he suffered in the United States and competition for places up front will be particularly fierce. Danny Welbeck got the nod to partner Wayne Rooney in the Barclays Premier League opener at West Brom while Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf are the other striking options.

“Rooney’s been flying in pre-season,” said the boss. “His fitness is terrific, he has that restless energy, he never stands still. He’s a tremendous asset to our squad.

“It’s interesting to see how he’s combining with Welbeck at the moment – they’ve done very well together. Obviously when Chicharito comes back, I’ve got a selection problem because the boy’s got goals written all over him. And there’s also Berbatov, who’s done very well in pre-season.”

Hernandez and Owen have both been unavailable due to injury and illness and the manager will not rush them back into action. “A concussion is a concussion,” he asserted. “The medical opinion is that if you’ve had a concussion before, then you should be careful. We’ll give him the proper time to recover and that’s not far away. He should be back in a couple of weeks.

“Michael’s had a wee bit of a back problem. He’s doing his running now and he’s not far away. It’s one of these niggling things you pick up as you get older.”
