Just past the halfway stage and the season continues to baffle and perplex. We got it wrong on Sunday, anticipating a low-scoring affair against Manchester City, but at least we were right to back the sending off.
A month ago, you would have been unwise to back overs in a Reds match as the champions went on a run of 1-0 wins. Now you can get little more than evens on over 3.5 goals in Saturday’s match against Bolton. This is because four of the Reds’ last five matches have produced five goals.
On the road, United have been excellent in defence – conceding six, which is less than anyone else in the Barclays Premier League – while at home they’ve shipped 14 in 10 matches, which is more than the likes of Swansea and West Brom. United’s 5-0 win over Wigan was only the fourth home clean sheet in the league this season. Backing both teams to score at Old Trafford is, in the short term at least, wise.
At this stage last year, the Reds had kept two more home clean sheets in the league. But they’d played a game more and they weren’t lacking their best
